Today in Chile, a hate crime law was finally passed. You can read all about it in today’s link. Spurred on by the horrific murder of Daniel Zamundio earlier this year, the Chilean congress finally dealt with the issue after the bill had stalled for 7 years.
It’s really sad to see that things only seem to get done when terrible things happen. Matthew Shepherd was the same, and there are other countries all around the world where similar legislation has either stalled, died, or has not even made it to the table. Many times our politicians just deny the fact that these laws are needed.
Maybe some day all countries will work to protect the rights of their LGBTQ citizens.
