Birthday Boy and DOMA.

Today’s Link

Hello Blogpickers! I hope this day finds you all well and enjoying life wherever you may be! Today is my birthday too. I’m forty five……gosh.

Today’s link is a great birthday present. It talks about a fantastic decision of a federal appeals court that ruled that DOMA, the Defence Of Marriage Act, is unconstitutional. This is the first time that an appeals court has ruled this way and brings things one step further to a Supreme Court decision.  Who knows what way the Supreme Court will vote on something like this, but each time that a lower court declares it unconstitutional that surely has to strengthen the case.

We’ll keep an eye open on this one.  How many more appeals does it have to go through before it gets to the Supreme Court?  Any of my American friends care to enlighten us all?

The Teletubbies.

Today’s Link

Greetings all and a happy Wednesday to you all. I’m in the car on my way back from Canada, the land of headaches for me. Maybe it was something in the water….

Anyway, around these parts we like to keep you up to date with the news that is really important. Today is no exception and neither was yesterday. Though today’s news is not quite as fantastic as Gareth finally getting his kit off, but it is still important.

The Teletubbies were not gay. Now it is official. You can read all about it in the link. I am sure Jerry Fallwell is turning in his grave now….

Gareth is back!

Today’s Link

What would life be without a little Gareth to spice things up?  Today’s link proudly announces that Gareth is getting his kit off for the upcoming Attitude magazines “Bare edition”

Now before people get all hot and bothered about this and call it porn, it’s a little deeper than that.  Clearly there is a nudity/erotica aspect to this, but these things are usually tastefully done, often by some of the top photographers in the game too.  On top of that, the issue is a fund-raiser/awareness exercise that works to promote the National AIDS Trust and the testing schemes that it runs.

Does that make it acceptable?  I’ll say yes, as long as it is tastefully done.  It has Gareth in it, right?  Which means we get to learn about sport too.

All good stuff….

Grenell in the news again.

Today’s Link

Just a short one tonight, folks, as I am really tired.  I am at the University of Waterloo in Canada where I just presented some of my work at The Canadian Society for Education’s conference.  The work was on transgressive art and it was a good presentation!

Today’s post deserves to be short not only because I am tired but also because of the subject matter.  You’ll recall the Richard Grenell was on the Romney team and resigned a few weeks ago.  In an interview he talks about it and the fact that so many of the negative comments were from the left as well as the right.  Now I don’t believe for one minute that the comments from the left affected him.  If they did, then he should not have been in the job in the first place.

What I do take issue with is that he states that he is not one-dimensional, like so many people try to make the LGBTQ issue out to be.  I have a number of friends who say the same thing, that you can’t just live everything through the LGBTQ lens.

Well, Mr Grenell, it’s not about being one-dimensional.  As I have pointed out before it’s about tax , about healthcare, about civil rights, about social security, about employment, about education, and so on.  Maybe that’s enough dimensions for you to consider.

And hats of to you for being able to vote for and support someone who wants to ACTIVELY deny you those things.

Il Duce will save us, remember?

DOMA and the courts.

Today’s Link

Greetings from a hotel room in Kitchener, Canada! What, I hear you cry, am I doing here? I’m here to present at a conference tomorrow that is being held by The Canadian Society for Education. I’m presenting on Queer and Transgressive art; Cool Stuff! The conference is being held at the university of waterloo.

Today’s Link is actually news from a few days ago. It refers to the fact that DOMA has been declared unconstitutional again, this time because it denies benefits to same sex couples who are employed by the federal government. The law was not defended by the Obama administration who have said that they won’t defend it, believing it to be unconstitutional. That is a point that is debatable.

What is worth pointing out is that the law was defended by the Republican led house group who stepped into the breach. That clearly states that they disagree and want to keep such a discriminatory law on the books.

Obviously this is also going to be a battle for a long while to come…..

Marvel and the Million Mom’s

Today’s Link

Happy Friday!  To those of you in the USA it’s also a holiday weekend too so I hope you are going to have a good time!

Well, it seemed like it was about time for us to visit the Million Mom’s again, one of my favourite groups to post about.  You’ll recall that we have talked about them before, most recently over the JC Penny and Ellen issue.  Well now it seems that they have Marvel Comics in their sights.  This particular spat is all about one of the X-Men and the fact that he is gay.  Yes, you read it right.  We are getting our knickers in a twist over super hero comics now…..

Aside from the fact that this is a comic, why shouldn’t there be gay super heroes?  Art reflects life, correct?  So it stands to reason that there must be gay superheroes…..
