Colorado is a state that has a mixed track record of equality for its citizens. Many of you will remember that it became notorious back in 1992 for passing an amendment that made it illegal to pass ordinances to protect LGBTQ folks from discrimination. They also passed a constitutional amendment in 2006 prohibiting marriage equality.
Today the house, in a bipartisan vote, passed a civil unions bill which will now head to the Republican controlled senate. That’s a big change from the past. I have no idea whether it will pass and the link for today doesn’t give much of an indication either. It is interesting though to see how a state that has such an anti-gay reputation can turn itself around.
I guess we will find out soon whether things really have changed in the Rocky Mountain State. Here’s to hoping!
