Today the Obama campaign issued an identically worded statement regarding the upcoming Minnesota amendment. While the last one could have been considered a special and unique case, this confirms that Obama really is prepared to deal with this issue in his campaign. There is no way that either Santorum or Romney (or Gingrich for that matter) will pass up the opportunity to use this in their campaigning. Indeed, Santorum and Gingrich have signed pledges promising to deny marriage equality here in the US. Romney didn’t sign the pledge himself, due to an issue with the wording, but he has stated on numerous occasions that he does not support marriage equality.
So what does this mean? It means that once again LGBTQ people will become a part of this election once more, whether you want to or not. Your rights will be at the centre of the fight again. Only this time, the battle appears to be shifting ground with more and more people in North America supporting marriage equality as time goes by. LGBTQ rights seem to be taking stage side by side with the issue of immigration again.
It’s shaping up to be a bumpy election campaign again…..
