Sometimes it easy for us to sit back and just criticize our own countries for their shortcomings in the area of LGBTQ rights. We certainly have much to do both in the US and the UK, but there are many other countries who have it far worse.
Take for example today’s link about Malaysia. While it may seem silly to be writing about gay characters on telly when there are so many issues to be dealing with, it highlights just how lowly the thinking about LGBTQ folks is in that country. Television is one area where the inclusion of LGBTQ folks can have such a positive influence on showing that we exist and that we have a place in ordinary life. It also provides important role models for kids in that they can see that they are not alone.
I hope that the Malaysian government comes to their senses over this ridiculous form of censorship. Hopefully they will also realise that ignoring something doesn’t mean that it doesn’t exist.
